Making cycling even more sustainable - part by part

Being a part of the biking movement is a privilege. Our industry gets to contribute to something that promotes the health of both the individual and our planet. It also comes with a great responsibility.

So in other words – we believe we all have a choice. We have decided to make our best effort to make our operations more sustainable and thereby taking our part of the responsibility for the planet. It will not be easy, but it is the right thing to do, and doing it together is the fastest way. At Herrmans we have started our journey, and we want to welcome you to join our journey towards carbon neutrality!

Carbon footprint reduction is an essential part

By regularly tracking and measuring our carbon footprint, we analyze our impact on the environment and take measures to reduce it. Carbon footprint intensity is also equally important, especially in a growing company and when you consider material use.

A carbon footprint consists of 3 different Scopes

Carbon footprint is the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused directly and indirectly by the operations.

Scope 1 includes direct emissions from own activities, such as fuel from own vehicles and machines.

Scope 2 includes indirect emissions from own activities, such as purchased electricity and heat.

Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions such as raw material procurement and their logistics, waste treatment, water consumption, business travel etc.

Scopes 1 and 2 are already Zero for our manufacturing plant in Finland

Thanks to the minimal use of fuels and the use of 100% renewable energy, our plant in Finland is already carbon neutral. We are replacing our entire vehicle fleet to electric models during a 3-year period, and in the meantime we are offsetting the small remaining part until all vehicles are renewed. We have chosen the Verra certified project Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve in Borneo. The certificate can be found here: Herrmans Certificate of Verified Carbon Unit (VCU)

Our remaining impact is in scope 3, especially in the use of materials for producing our products

The largest source of emission in Herrmans’ carbon footprint are found in Scope 3 and more precisely the materials that we use in our products. For this reason, we are currently focusing on including the upstream items in scope 3, as we see that is what we can influence directly ourselves and where we can make the biggest impact. We recognize this as the biggest challenge to tackle, and we will be sharing the lessons we learn along the journey.

Herrmans’ ambitious target: decarbonize the operations 100% by 2035

This means we must use more recycled materials, but also biobased options to reduce the use of fossil-based materials and lower our carbon footprint in the long run. This is where our focus will lie in the years to come. The latest result is the introduction of Nucore, our new biobased grip series. Read more about Nucore here, and follow this page to read more about our research and introduction of new materials to follow our journey!
